I love this article Richard, particularly as it is about trees and organisations, both of which are my passions and also because it speaks of the separation of head from body in an educational setting this time. I completely agree that we need to prepare for a broadleaf future...

For a good decade and a half, one of my closest colleages was a corporate guy. Eventually he ended up at their headquarters. He was smart, talented, and knew how to develop leadership in others. Rare breed. During one of our meetings, we were talking about our lives. He said, "I envy your freedom." I look at him and said, "I envy your paycheck." We are both "sort-of, but not-really" retired. Life is good for both of us.

There’s something here about labels, particularly “retirement”. From what? Are we to accept work as defining us in this way? I always liked Terry Pratchett’s status description as “not dead yet”. We have as much, if not more, to learn at this point than we ever had. In May ways, we’re just getting the hang of it :-)
