I once had to choose what to pack up in our household that would fit in the car in the face of a wildfire evacuation threat. As I surveyed all of our belongings, I was surprised to discover that what went into the boxes were not all my favorite expensive things but mostly my keepsakes. My kids artwork, notes from mother to me, a few really special books, photo albums, little items that signified special moments in our lives together-the truly irreplaceable pieces that make up the character of our relationships and the physical representations of the beauty of my lived life.
I love that, and, when we do it's so obvious. We spend a lot of time yearning for things that, when it comes down to it, don't matter, and too little tresauring the things we can take for granted.
Packing for a future seems a little contradictory ( oxymoron). Although, we can only bring with us what we have had. I wonder if it might be possible to pack IN our future.
