The problem is that we are treating trust as a commodity. It isn't. It is an outcome. An outcome of what? Of relationships of respect and mutuality. And of a belief in the value of each person and in their capacity to create impact.
As you describe, most larger business are not organized this way. It is really difficult to create trust. Want trust? Build relationships.
Richard. Thanks for this. The chart shows trust decreasing across the board, which is my experience of life.
Has the trauma of COVID and working at home decreased trust everywhere.
After a challenging evening at the sailing club I would notice that people are now using democracy as a weapon to get what they want driving wedges into trust.
It is. All related surveys lean in the same direction, and I suspect there is something about uncertainty being best addressed in good company, at a time when all the pressures, including “busyness” tend to make us feel isolated and alone.
What do you think Godin means by "focused and persistent propaganda is able to shift public opinion about institutions they don’t have direct interaction with."?
I'm astonished to see that the trust in the media didn't fall further than that after the last few years. It would have been interesting to see a stat for trust in the medical establishment too.
Hi Matt. I think of it in terms of the "Overton Window" (link below). When we are in a relationship - real or virtual, where what the other party rthinks and feels matter to us, it is different to the remote association we have with much of the media and the machinery of politics. to borrow from the Buddha, we become what we think, and from Jim Rohn, the average of the five people we most associate with.
These are times when we need to test what we think against the views of those we trust, and its getting harder, so we need to be mindful of how our opinions are being shaped.

It harks back to a comment made by a group I was part of last evening. Healthy Democracies require Healthy Relationships........

Great question; thank you.
